Nicole Gill is an honours physiotherapy graduate from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
She also has a Human Kinetics degree specializing in Movement Science from the University Of Windsor, Ontario. Nicole was born and raised in Windsor and worked in the local area for one year prior to moving out west to Victoria, BC. Since graduating, she has taken many courses to increase her knowledge, including Manual Therapy courses and Canadian Acupuncture of Canada Institute (CAFCI) qualifications which she uses as part of the many tools to treat patients. Acupuncture is the insertion of extremely fine needles through the skin at specific points on the body. There is no injection, but rather stimulation to specific structures (i.e. bone, soft tissue, nerves, etc.), which causes very minimal discomfort. These points are precisely located along acupuncture meridians in order to produce the desired effect. The practice of acupuncture was originally developed in China to diagnose and treat pain and disease, but is also currently used as an enhanced treatment in physiotherapy. It is used effectively to control pain, resolve inflammation, provide regeneration, restore physical functions, and normalize the nervous system activities. It stimulates the release of endorphins, which results in pain relief, relaxation, and balance of the body’s energy, or “Qi” (pronounced “Chee”), therefore promoting general health and well-being. Acupuncture can be especially beneficial when combined with other aspects of a physiotherapy program. Physiotherapists achieve acupuncture certification (CAFCI) through the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (AFCI). It is commonly use to treat both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as joint sprains, muscle strains, tendonitis, disc injuries, osteoarthritis, headaches, and many more. Patients and conditions are unique and individual response may vary to acupuncture. A six session trial is average and recommended to assess condition changes and benefits. Your physiotherapist will still include an appropriate home and clinic therapy program to maintain all benefits gained. Acupuncture with physiotherapy is included under many insurance benefit programs. If you have any questions or are wondering whether acupuncture is an appropriate treatment option for you, please feel free to read our AFCI brochure and speak to your Physiotherapist.
