Laurence Muir completed his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at the University of Victoria and also works as a fitness trainer for athletes on local high school sport teams.
Laurence started a University practicum at the Gordon Head Recreation Centre Kinesiology Clinic in 2015, assisting with land and pool based exercise rehabilitation. He has been mentored by four different Kinesiologists at the clinic and, with a broad-minded approach, continually draws upon experiences and knowledge obtained from working with each of them in his practice.
As an avid basketball player, Laurence’s personal experience with a variety of injuries has developed his passion for injury rehabilitation; but he equally enjoys helping individuals needing movement and balance training and using exercise as medicine to compress morbidity and increase quality of life and years of health in seniors.
Laurence has been volunteering at the MOVE Adapted Fitness and Rehabilitation Centre since 2014 where he has gained valuable experience helping patrons with a variety of physical disabilities overcome fitness barriers, which cultivated his passion for client education and helping people feel happy and healthy.
Laurence strives to create a motivating environment that fosters both enjoyment and achievement.
In his spare time, Laurence likes to play guitar and piano, keep physically active with fitness training and participation in a variety of sports, and take the long way home on his bicycle after work.
Laurence works with the team at the Gordon Head Recreation Centre Clinic, representing Shelbourne Physiotherapy and Massage, teaching pool and gym rehabilitation classes and working with individuals in Kinesiology sessions.
Larry is trained and experienced in utilizing the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) program for her clients in Victoria. The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a dynamic assessment tool, evaluating multiple body segments in fundamental movement patterns. FMS evaluates the quality of 7 fundamental movements and provides quantitative data that allowed for the provision of individualised corrective exercise programs. This assessment tool identifies individuals at risk of injury and also qualifying them to perform specific movements. FMS identifies faulty movement patterns and imbalances allowing for the development of corrective strategies. The FMS can be applied to any fitness level, identifies specific exercises based on FMS scores to help in the creation of a customized treatment plan.
